Students warn Akeredolu to reverse education policy

Students of higher institutions in Ondo state who said they have not received their bursary since the present governor came to power, have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the governor, Rotimi Akeredolu to reverse his administration’s education policy which they considered anti-social or face their wrath.
The students who protested in Akure, the state capital, stormed the state’s scholarship board and disrupted official activities.
The students, under the aegis of National Association of Ondo State Students (NAOSS) condemned Akeredolu’s abolition of free education in primary and secondary schools in the state.
The protesting students also condemned the introduction of WAEC and NECO fees, non-payment of bursary, and an alleged plan by the state government to increase tuition of the state-owned Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA) from N40,000 to N200,000.
President of NAOSS, Comrade Olanrewaju told journalists that the students have not enjoyed bursary since Akeredolu became the state governor.
NAOSS president said that all eff orts made by his association and NANS to meet the governor over their plight had failed.
“We are giving the state government seven-day ultimatum to accede to our demands or face mass protest that would completely shut down government’s activities in Akure,” he said.
However, Ondo state commissioner for information and orientation, Mr Yemi Olowolabi while reacting to the students’ allegations against the governor, dismissed the allegation that Akeredolu’s administration was engaged in anti-people policies.
He added that the state government would soon commence the payment of bursary and scholarship to students from the state.
