European (EU) Union Project Officer, Energy, Godfrey Ogbemudia, has called on stakeholders to advocate for subsidy on renewable energy projects in Nigeria in order to meet the energy demands of the nation.
He made the call at the weekend during the monthly Youth Dialogue organised by the Young Journalists Forum and the Embassy of Ecuador in Abuja.
Ogbemudai said “in 1979, Denmark implemented a subsidy equal to 30per cent of wind turbine investment cost, this spurred the much investment and led to the initial deployment of 200-300 machines a year.”
“Denmark has sustained that feat, for the past 40years,” he said, urging stakeholders in “Nigeria to promote the implementation of the subsidy in Nigeria, to promote growth in the sector and increase energy available for consumption, adding that Nigeria has the potentials of powering all sectors with renewable energy.”
Also speaking, the Ambassador of Ecuador in Nigeria, Leopoldo, Rovayo Verdesoto, said “energy is one of the main issues to be solved to put Nigeria up,” adding that it “requires partnership between government and the private sector as government alone cannot do it.”
According to him, Ecuador generates more energy through wind, but is also battling to check emissions due to power and industrial activities.
The coordinator, Young Journalists Forum, Comrade Chukwuma Nzeh, in a remark, said the essence was to raise issues around renewable energy for young professionals to have “a more robust engagement on the use of renewables as better alternatives for our energy demands.”
