Spiritual leader of Nigeria’s Muslims and the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, yesterday warned that Fulani’s patience and silence over recent killings of their kinsmen should not be misconstrued for weakness.
He also called for through investigation into the killings in four villages of Numan, Adamawa state, by Bachama militias.
Speaking in Yola, during the commissioning of Pulaaku FM Radio, owned by Adamawa paramount ruler, Lamido Muhammadu Barkindo, the Sultan condemned the massacre of over 60 women and children in Shaforon, Kikem and Kodemti villages in Numan.
The Sultan, who was represented by the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, stressed that government and other relevant security authorities should thoroughly investigate those involved for peace to reign.
“May I use this opportunity to sympathise with the people of Adamawa state on the recent incidents in Numan, and to appeal to security forces to thoroughly investigate the incidents and bring the perpetrators to book.
“We have not forgotten what happened to the Fulani in Mambila, Taraba state, and we are still waiting for action from the security services,” he said.
He also warned that the Fulani’s patience should not be misconstrued for weakness, adding that “it is important to remember that at many points in our history, we make mistakes of confusing patience for weakness.”
“I hope we would not make that mistake this time; what happened in Numan should not go unpunished.”
