Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa wins Saudi Super Cup

Super Eagles striker Ahmed Musa has started the year 2020 on an impressive note after helping his club Al-Nassr to win the Saudi Arabia Super Cup beating Al-Taawoun 5-4 on penalties.

Ahmed Musa and his teammates were the winners of the 2018–19 Saudi Pro League while Al-Taawoun are the winners of the 2019 King Cup.

Both teams however finished the regulation time of this encounter 1-1 before proceeding into penalties. This will now be the second title that Ahmed Musa will be winning with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr since he joined them.

The former Leicester City star was also among the Super Eagles squad that won bronze medal at the 2019 Nations Cup in Egypt.

The Saudi Super Cup is a one-off final match between the previous year’s league champions and the King’s Cup winners.

Al-Nassr have not won the Cup despite this being their third appearance in the competition, finishing as runners-up in both the 2014 and 2015 editions of the Super Cup. For Al-Taawoun’s, it’s their first appearance in the competition.

It was the first-timers who drew the first blood when Cameroonian forward Leandre Tawamba Kana gave Paolo Sergio’s men the lead in the 18th minute.

But Abderrazak Hamdallah equalised for Al Nassr just before the hour mark meaning both teams had to settle for a 1-1 draw after the 90 minutes.

Al Nassr had the last laugh, though, triumphing 5-4 in the ensuing penalty shoot out. Ahmed Musa and Al Nassr are favourites to also defend their Saudi Pro League title as the champions are the clear league leaders, enjoying a five-point advantage over second place Al Hilal.
