Super Falcons to go far at 2023 World Cup – Waldrum

Super Falcons can make “a deep run” at next year’s Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, according to coach Randy Waldrum.

“As far as the World Cup is concerned, our expectation is to get out of our group and make a deep run,” coach Waldrum said ahead of today’s friendly against Japan in Kobe.

“We have the talent to do that and right now we just need time together so that we can continue to prepare properly.”

In 2019, the Falcons also reached the knockout rounds of the World Cup before they were stopped by hosts France.

Waldrum said pitting his team against the likes of Japan and world champions USA can only improve them.

“We play against the best teams in the world because that is what it will be like at the World Cup,” he explained.

“You don’t get better if you don’t play the best competition.

“Japan are a world power, they are a very disciplined and organised team.

“They have maintained their quality, they now have physically strong players.

“It will be a difficult challenge, but it will be a great experience for us as we prepare for the World Cup.

“We have some young players, we need to find out where we are lacking and playing teams like Japan will expose areas we need to improve upon.”
