Support economic transformation, Jonathan tells accountants

President Goodluck Jonathan has called on professional accountants to support federal government in its efforts to transform the nation’s economy.
Jonathan made the call yesterday at the State House in Abuja when he received members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) led by the president of the association, Mr. Kabir Mohammed.

Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, who spoke to State House correspondents after the courtesy visit, said the president emphasised the importance of institute in the nation’s economy.
He said: “President Jonathan commended the profession, congratulated the institute and the new President of ICAN and emphasized the importance of ICAN in the economy.

“Accounting anywhere in the world, is a noble profession and that is why not everybody is chartered to practice. It is the only profession where you study economics, law, taxation and everything that has to do with business. So they are the gateway to business anywhere in the world. That is why the failure rate is high. Not very many people become professional accountant.”
Speaking on the implication of the newly rebased GDP on the nation’s economy, president of ICAN, Mr. Kabir Mohammed said the new figures would boost foreign direct investment and investors’ confidence in the economy.
“It is an opportunity for Nigeria to come up to date and take her rightful place among the comity of nations. Using these bases, you can see that we have moved into our proper position. We have incorporated structures hitherto not considered. This is an opportunity for people who want to invest in the country to make the right decision and come in.”
