The Supreme Court of Nigeria did not split the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) into two bodies, the Niger state chairman of the union, Comrade Ibrahim Umar, has said.
Umar stated this at the weekend while addressing stakeholders at a state working committee meeting in Minna.
He said the clarification became imperative due to misconception and misinterpretation of the Supreme Court judgement that Secondary school teachers have been given the legal right to form their own union – Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools.
It was learnt that secondary school teachers in the NUT have engaged the union in a long drawn legal battle to break out since 2004
Presenting certified true copies of the Supreme Court judgement of January 15, 2021, Comrade Umar urged members to disregard any information to the contrary and continue to work for the peace and unity of the Union.
He said the Supreme Court in its judgement referred the case back to the court of Appeal for retrial by another panel of justices.
“Therefore disregard the deliberate and misguided misinterpretations given to this judgement by ASUSS and their cohorts,” he said.
Also speaking, the Principal Assistant Secretary of the Union Comrade Labaran Garba said legal action would be taken against those who spread false information about the Supreme Court judgement, adding that all commentaries on the issue should be properly guided.
