‘Surveying key to addressing Nigeria’s challenges’

The acting Surveyor-General of the Federation, Taiwo Adeniran, has said surveying and mapping were critical to the development of the nation.

Adeniran said Nigeria’s security challenges could be tackled through geo-mapping with a view to generating data that would guide security agencies in their operations.

He spoke on Tuesday at the opening ceremony of a two-day bi-annual conference of zonal directors and chief resident surveyors in Abuja.

Speaking on the theme of the conference: “Integration of Geospatial Information: Fundamental Input in National Security and Infrastructural Development, “the acting Surveyor-General noted that the event was timely owing to President Muhammadu Buhari’s genuine commitment to addressing the country’s development challenges.

He recalled, “While inaugurating the National Economic Advisory Council, President Buhari reiterated the need for the council to generate primary data that will guide the formulation of policies for feasible implementation and execution for even development of the Nigerian economy,” Adeniran said.

He disclosed that the essence of the conference was to brainstorm and proffer ways of helping the government to meet the needs of Nigerians.

In a goodwill message, the President, Nigerian Institute of Surveyors, Alabo Charles, urged the federal government to pay attention to capacity building in terms of human resource generation and infrastructure and technology acquisition.
