Suspect defecates in Edo court to ‘evade trial’

There was a mild drama at the premises of Oredo Magistrates court in Benin Cit, the Edo state capital, on Tuesday after a suspect identified as Abdulahi  Muhammed, 18, defecated on his body in an attempt to dodge trial.
The accused suddenly excreted when his case was being registered in the court’s registry in preparatory for his arraignment.
Amidst confusion arising from the offensive smell, Muhammed took off his cloths and took to his heels.
The Investigative Police Officer (IPO), Sgt. Aigbochie Iruonagbe, promptly gave the accused a hot chase and retrieved him accordingly.
Other policemen, who were invited for reinforcement, gave the accused a bag of sachet water to refresh.
Mohammed is standing trial on a one-count charge of stealing four cartoons of powder milk being a property belonging to one Favour Nwachukwu.
Iruonagbe later told the court that the accused committed the offence on October 8, at Mission Road, Benin City, adding that  the offence was punishable under Section 390 (4) (a) of the criminal Code.
The accused pleaded guilty to the charge.
After listening to the charge, the presiding Magistrates, Mrs. J.O Ejale, in her ruling, adjourned the case till October 14, for evidence and verdict.
