Suspected herders Kill 2 Benue livestock guards



Two members of the Benue state Livestock Guard were Monday evening shot dead by some suspected herdsmen militia.

The victims were identified as Orkpen Aondohemba, who was head of the Livestock Guard in Logo local government and his close member, Gbaior Torkor, popularly known as Yellow.  

The two guards were said to have been attacked and killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen around 2 pm at Tombo council ward,  Gaambe Tiev, Logo LGA of  Benue state.

Confirming the incident, Commander of the Benue State Livestock Guard, Mr  Linus Zaki, said his men were killed while on official duty by the suspected herdsmen militia.

He said on Monday being the 6th of July, 2020, information was received that herders had brought in cattle and were openly grazing in Logo.

According to him, some of the guards moved to the said location and met some young herders with cows destroying people’s farms. 

He further noted that the guards impounded the crows and were taking the animals and the herders with them according to the law to Ugba, the local government headquarters, when they were attacked by armed militia and two of the guards; Aondohemba and Gbaior were shot and killed on the spot by the armed herders.

“This happened before Agro Rangers of Civil Defence Corps, who were alerted could get to the scene of the incident.

“As a law abiding organisation, we have handed the arrested young herders whose names are Shaibu Hussaini and Kadiri Zakari to the police for prosecution. 

“Let me however state that the attack on our men was unprovoked and stands condemned,” he said.
