Take over investigation into murder of Umoren, Reps tell IGP

The House of Representatives has directed the Inspector General of Police, AlkalinUsman, to immediately take over the investigation into circumstances leading to the alleged murder of Miss Iniubong Umoren during her job search in Akwa-Ibom state.

While condemning in strong terms, the alleged act of sexual assault and gruesome murder of Miss Iniubong Ephraim Umoren as barbaric, inhuman and despotic, the House on Tuesday, also mandated the Inspector General of Police to ensure the protection of her family members from harrassment, intimidation and harm.

Its Committee on Women Affairs and Social Developmenthas been further directed to  to follow up with the investigation and prosecution; ensure compliance and report back to the House, as a minute silence was observed in honour of the deceased and other victims of such nefarious acts

This came following a motion presented under matters of urgent public importance by Hon. Unyime Idem, who recalled that on April 30, 2021, the Anti-kidnapping Squad of the Akwa Ibom State Command of the Nigeria Police Force received a criminal report on the disappearance of Miss Iniubong Ephraim Umoren, who left her house on the fateful day in search of employment.

Reports were that innocent Umoren was later found dead and buried in a shallow grave, by the Officers of the Nigeria Police Force after an official report and with the help of a wide reportage of her disappearance and information of a false interview on social media platforms.

According to the lawmaker, “available information has it that she received a phone call from the assailant who pretentiously called her and invited her to a false interview of an advertised job”, but never returned home.
