Taraba to vaccinate 639, 713 kids against measles, meningitis

The State Primary Health Care Development Agency at the weekend launched a campaign targeted at vaccinating over 600, 000 children for measles and meningitis in the 16 local government areas of the state.

Executive director of the agency, Aminu Jauro Hassan, stated this in Jalingo during an advocacy meeting organised for journalists in the state.

The meeting which held at the Millennium Event Centre, Jalingo, was aimed at orienting and supporting the media on the integrated meningitis and measles vaccination campaign scheduled for 16th -23rd November, 2019.

Hassan said “measles is still a problem and thousands of children die annually from the disease,” adding that to be protected against the disease, it was important that children who are 9 months to five years receive the immunisation during the campaign.

The executive director, who was represented by the director of community health of the agency, Zakari Chindo,  maintained that the campaign would also capture children from one to five years of age (1-5years) for meningitis vaccination.

He, therefore, tasked the state to assist the agency in achieving the set goals by reaching out to the public on the need to fight the ugly killer diseases.

In a paper titled Advocacy Journalism, health educator, Taraba State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Mrs. Mercy Maigoge, said the role of journalists in the society could not be overemphasised.

She said the media should assist the agency in creating awareness on the campaign and for people to avail themselves of the vaccines.

She expressed optimism that with the media, the set objective would be achieved.
