Taskforce repels bandits’ attack on Niger town

The security Joint Task Force stationed in Erena town of Shiroro local government of Niger state has successfully repelled terrorists attack on the town after hours of gun battle.

Blueprint learnt that the bandits invaded the town at about 4am Tuesday morning in large numbers in a coordinated attempt to unleash havoc on the people.

It was gathered that the security task force based in the town however put up brave fights with superior fire power that prevented the bandits from gaining access.

A witness and Co- Convener of Shiroro Youths Forum, Bello Ibrahim told Blueprint that a vehicle belonging to the security outfit was however burnt by the bandits.

According to Ibrahim, who spoke in telephone interview with Blueprint, “Yes, I can confirm to you that in the early hours of today, terrorists in their large numbers stormed Erena town in an attempt to unleash havoc on defenceless, peaceful and unsuspecting locals.”

He explained that the terrorists however met a vehement resistance from Security Joint Task Force, comprising conventional security and local vigilantes, stationed at Day Secondary School, Erena.

He said, “They were engaged in a fierce gun battle which lasted for hours and consequently, the criminals couldn’t gain access to the town. There were sporadic gunshots as sounds of gunshots could be heard from all over the places”.

He said casualty figures from both sides have not been ascertained as the area has been condone off by security adding that, “however a vehicle belonging to the gallant security men was seen to have been burnt. On the whole, the deadly attack was successfully repelled. Kudos to our gallant officers and local vigilantes for this heroic outing.”

The police were yet to issue statement on the incident while efforts to get the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Abiodun Wasiu were not successful.
