TCN laments power shortage despite supply to 2 countries

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has identified weak distribution network as one of the factors responsible for the power shortage in Nigeria.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of TCN, Engineer Mohammed Gur Usman, disclosed this while speaking with Journalists in Abuja Monday night.
Usman lamented that Nigeria which supplies Togo and Benin Republic about 80 percent of power consumed in the two neighbouring countries could not boast of stable power.
He called on the the Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to borrow a leaf from the two countries.
The TCN boss also called for serious investment in the DisCos in order to achieve constant and stable power supply in the country.
He said: “The reality is that we need investments in the DisCos.
We need to change the distribution network.
Some of you may not know.
Any of you who has the opportunity of entering Republic of Benin, 80% of the electricity that is consumed in Benin and Togo is coming from Nigeria.
” “Go to Benin, you will have a stable power, but why is there no stable power in Nigeria? Why is it that they have stable power and we don’t have, it is because our distribution network is weak.
Go to Togo or just Benin here, and see how a distribution network is supposed to be.” Usman also disclosed that the DisCos lacked the capacity, adding that proper investments had not entered the companies He said that TCN was working through its functional planning system with several DisCos to build their distribution models for them.
To this end, he said TCN had redefined the issue of load rejection since April 2017 when it started referring to the situation as load unutilized.
Usman added that the company had upgraded and boosted its capacity in several cities such as Apo, Suleja, Keffi, Katampe to improve power supply.
The TCN boss, who stated that the Ministry of Power recently approved N72billion investment in the DisCos, disclosed that the company had been mandated to strictly monitor the investments.
He also disclosed that the TCN had secured €25million from the European Union for the implementation of projects.
