Several security personnel have been drafted to Madagali local government secretariat in Adamawa state following the crisis that erupted over the emergence of two council chairmen.
Our correspondent reports that already tension is mounting following the sacking of Mr. Maina Ularamu by a Court of Appeal in Yola, while reports said the growing tension was as a result of the position of the two chairmen to continue to supervise the affairs of the local government council.
Ularamu had held that he still remained in office following the stay of action he got after he appealed his case at the Supreme Court, just as the reinstated chairman said he was the substantive chairman following the court declaration.
Blueprint gathered that both parties had accused the police of failure to respect the law.
Speaking through his lawyer, Barrister Abel Ozioko, Ularamu said he had filed an appeal at the Supreme Court and sought an order of stay of execution at the Appeal Court, stressing that all relevant documents which included notice of appeal and motion of stay of execution had been made available to the police in Yola, but they were adamant.
A court of appeal sitting in Yola and presided over by Justice, Adamu Jauro, had on March 25, this year, set aside the High Court judgement that sacked Watharda and returned Ularamu as the duly elected chairman of Madagali.
Also speaking, Watharda accused the police of refusing to respect the Appeal Court judgement that returned him to office.
He said despite assurances, the Adamawa state Commissioner of police failed to implement the judgement.
Watharda said the repercussion of the inaction on the side of the police, saying his supporters are anxious to see him in office.
“This country is doomed, the Court of Appeal has given me judgement, but the Commissioner of Police is saying he is waiting for IG’s directive to escort me to office,” he said.
Blueprint recalls that the political crisis started a year ago after Ularamu claimed to have won the PDP primary election only to have his name substituted.
When contacted, the Adamawa state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ibrahim Muhammad, said he would get back to our reporter, which he never did.
