Tension in Tunga Maje as lawyer foils kidnap attempt

There was tension in Tunga Maje village, a suburb of Gwagwalada Area Council of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Tuesday, following an attack on a legal practitioner, Barrister David Aigbefoh, and his household by suspected kidnappers.

Barrister Aigbefoh told Blueprint that about 1.30am Tuesday he heard a loud noise at the gate of his house and realised that the kidnappers were with AK47 and bullets chained round their necks.

According to him, “Three of them went to the back of my bedroom and one whom I suspected to be their leader was with a gun. They broke about three doors, starting from the gate, before gaining access into the main house. I used a machete to attack the person with the gun and called a neighbour who is a DSP, who in turn called the vigilante and the police who responded to my call 30 minutes after.

“After about 10 minutes, they reinforced and came back, shooting sporadically in the house with the bullets hitting the windows, wall and doors all over. The suspected attackers however escaped without any kidnap,” Aigbefoh said.

He said the suspects were not mere thieves but kidnappers because their sophisticated weapons suggested the level of kidnapping going on across the country, explaining that he is a peace maker who has no issue with anybody and would therefore not envisage any reprisal from any quarter.

“These people were fully armed and prepared to take me away if not for my gallantry and alarm raised, and it’s not as if I have any issue with anybody, save for the case I won last month.

“One of them said he was going to kill me and he called me several times on my phones – that he was going to kill me but I wouldn’t know if he is the one,” Barrister Aigbefoh stated.

He called on the FCT Commissioner of Police and Inspector General of Police to re-jig the security arrangement in the Tunga Maje area which has witnessed several attacks in recent times in order to save the lives and prosperity of the residents.

Speaking on the incident, Chairman Nigerian Bar Association Gwagwalada branch, Barrister Isah Abubakar Aliyu described the spate of kidnapping across the country as worrisome, calling on the government at all levels to provide security to the citizenry.
