Tension in Uniuyo community as renewed cult clashes claim 4

Students of the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, are now studying in fears as renewed cult clashes have claimed the life of four students in the past two weeks

As early as 7am Wednesday, Some of the students in the hostel were seen leaving the hostels out of fears for possible reprisals as the corpse of a 300 level student was lying in the campus.

Some of the students who spoke to our correspondent expressed shock at the rate of killings by rival cult groups in the campus.

A group of students who were seen walking out of the main gate of the university along Ikpa road, who declined disclosing their identities to our correspondent said, “Our parents want us to leave the campus until the university is able to guarantee the safety of lives and properties in the school.”

Sources at the university disclosed that at the last matriculation there were a lot of shooting. He said: “During the matriculation there were clashes between cult groups. Just yesterday a student was shot dead during a clash between two cult groups at the Annex campus.

“I heard that three more students were shot dead early hours of today (Wednesday) at the Main Campus, Nwaniba, even though I have not confirmed that yet. We are afraid that the cult groups that lost their members may come for reprisal”

Also an Engineering student who did not want his name mentioned in the print called on the state government to intervene over the development before it gets out of control.

Also speaking on the need for government intervention, the Director of Information, Students Union Government, Mfon John said, “This is beyond security on campus”

He however, said that the Union was yet to confirm whether the person killed during Tuesday clash was a student of the University of Uyo.

Reports available to Blueprint revealed that a 300 level student of the department of Communication Arts, Fatherwills Ukpankere whose dead body was found behind the Barth Ebong Auditorium was allegedly killed during the cult clash which took place midnight of Tuesday.

The director of information, Mrs. Blossom Okorie said the incident has been reported to the police.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Odiko MacDon said the police are aware of the incident adding that the Commissioner of Police was trying to meet with the management of the University, in order to strategize on how to tackle the menace and ensure adequate security for the university.
