Tension over alleged plans to extend tenure of UI acting VC

Tension is mounting at the University of Ibadan over plans to allegedly extend the tenure of the Institution’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof Babatunde Ekanola.

It was reliably learnt the tension was as a result of the planned meeting of the University council fixed for Monday, May 17 to among other things consider elongation of tenure for the Acting VC.

This according to sources close to the University “is clearly against the law establishing the University which “allows appointment by the Senate of another qualified person as acting VC and NOT extension of tenure of incumbent.”

” There must not be a vacuum and so what should be done? The Law allows appointment by the senate of another qualified person as acting VC and NOT extension of tenure of incumbent”,  the source said.

As at present, intense lobbying is on going for and against the possibility of extending the Acting Vice Chancellor’s tenure ahead of the Council meeting on Monday.

However, the Director of Communication at the University, Mr. Olatunji Oladejo  confirmed that a meeting of the Senate has been slated to hold on Monday but  that he is not aware of the purpose of the meeting since he is not a member of the University of Ibadan.

“I will not want to preempt the outcome of the meeting, because I am not a member of the Senate. I can only report what happened after the meeting. So, I am not a member of the Senate, so whatever the outcome, it will come to me and I will communicate to the members of the public. “, he said
