Textile workers retire Aremu, elect new excos

The National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGWN) Friday retired her General Secretary, Comrade Issa Aremu and Deputy General Secretary, Dele Ojo, with a pledge to improve on the welfare of her members.

In a communiqué after her national executive council (NEC), the union replaced Comrade Aremu with Ali Baba as the acting General Secretary.


The union also elected Comrade John Adaji as the National President for a second term.

Others elected are; Comrade Frank Francis Michael as first Deputy President, Comrade Abdul Adamu, second Deputy President and Comrade Lawal Haruna, National Treasurer.

Comrade Usman Gambo, Comrade Peter Godonu, Comrade Abdulrahman Usman and Comrade Josephine Iweanya were elected National Trustees while Comrade Omokanye Saidu and Comrade Ezekiel Oluyemi were elected National Auditors of the union respectively.

The conference was preceded by a national administrative council (NAC) and national executive council (NEC) meeting at the Yar’Adua Centre during which vital decisions were taken. 

Addressing newsmen on the development, the National President, Comrade John Adaji said the conference agreed for the inclusion of the chairperson of the women committee as member of the NAC in line with ‘the union’s affirmative action on gender representation. 

He also commended President Muhammadu Buhari for signing the Executive Order 003 on support for local content in procurement, forex ban for textile importers, closure of borders to check smuggling, amongst other important decisions to salvage the industry.
