Three-storey building collapses in Ibadan, 5 rescued

Some 72 hours after building  collapse in Lagos, a three-storey building  collapsed Friday at Idi Arere Ibadan, Oyo state.

According to eyewitness account, the incident occurred at about 6.00 pm .

Although it could not be confirmed last night if anybody was killed, it was however gathered that  about five persons were rescued from the rubbles by the personnel  of  Fire Fighting Service and other allied agencies.

Rescuing operation was still ongoing as at the time of  this report.

Meanwhile, the Lagos Sate Building Control Agency (LABCA) has marked over 80 ‘weak’ buildings for demolition.

General Manager of the agency, Mr. Lekan Shodeinde said the  exercise became inevitable in view of the danger their continued existence posed to the safety of  Lags Island residents.

While there was uproar over the exercise which started Friday, the state government said it was able to discharge some of the court orders that had in the past inhibited the execution of the programme.

He said  the exercise would be carried out on daily basis with three buildings marked for demolition each day.

Shodeinde said at the end f the exercise, residents of Lagos island would be the better for it.

Meanwhile, residents of the affected areas have called on the Lagos state government to provide for them an alternative, even as they said there was no prior notice from the government.
