Tokyo Olympics: Nimrod upbeat of Nigeria Beach Volleyball qualification

Ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics qualifiers, Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) President Engineer Musa Nimrod has expressed optimism of Nigeria picking the male ticket.

Addressing sports reporters at the Beach Volleyball Courts of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna, on the sidelines of the team’s training before departing for the qualifiers in Lome, Togo, he said, “we are doing everything possible to pick the ticket for Tokyo 2020.

“My desire is to see both male and female teams in Tokyo. The Nigeria female team are holding on tight and same is expected of the male. Qualifiers for Beach Volleyball for Olympics is on and the female team went and excelled. We picked the ticket.

“Coaches have reviewed set up of the male team. Ghana and Togo are strong but we are confident of picking the male ticket in Togo. We pray it is injury free. In beach volleyball there is no room for substitution. I am very confident we will pick a ticket. The Rio De Janeiro pain is still with us because we lost to Egypt and they had to go,” he said.

He explained that the male qualifiers will begin on January 9th, while lamenting that, they had to make sacrifices from their personal purse to fund the teams’ participation in the qualifiers.

“At Federation level, we have done our best. We were only informed by CAVB we will have this qualifiers in December it is hard to bounce into government to say fund us. When we get the ticket, it is no more Federation funding but government. We have sacrificed we have pooled funds and the players are happy for it.

“The hosting right for the final just came out yesterday and we intend to host it. We hope to bid to host for the male and females final either in Kaduna or Abuja. It is difficult for Kaduna because of transportation problems but in Abuja once they arrive at airport they are there,” he explained.
