Total portfolio investment flows through NGX rise to N123.97bn in August

Total transactions at the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) on the Domestic and Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI) flows increased to N123.97 billion (about $289.04 million in the month of August this year.

The amount represents a surge of 22.52 per cent month on month from N101.18billion (about $236.86 million) reported in July 2022.

The NGX domestic and foreign portfolio inflow data also showed that in 8 months period Year-to-date, a total of N1.89 trillion has been transacted by both investors, rising 55.50 per cent year over year from N1.21 trillion in the comparable time period of 2021.

Also, August 2022 performance outperformed the N89.42 billion reported in the same period last year by 38.64 per cent on the back of improved earnings opportunity and relatively attractive Nigerian stocks.

According to the trading figures polled by the Exchange from market operators on their domestic and foreign portfolio inflows, the domestic portfolio investors attracted a total sum of N95.76 billion through equities transactions while foreign counterparts the period executed trades worth N28.21 billion.

On a month-on-month analysis of the data provided by the exchange, the total transactions executed between the current and prior month revealed that total domestic transactions increased significantly by 33.93 per cent from N71.50 billion in July to N95.76 billion in August 2022.

However, total foreign transactions decrease by 4.95 per cent from N29.68 billion to N28.21 billion between July 2022 and August 2022.

Also, on the domestic front in the month of August, the activities of institutional investors outperformed Retail Investors by 16 per cent with the total domestic transactions rising 29.89 per cent from N30.65 billion in July to N39.81 billion in August.

In the same vein, the institutional composition of the domestic market increased by 36.94 per cent from N40.85 billion in July 2022 to N55.95 billion in August 2022.

Over a 15 year period, the data showed that domestic transactions decreased by 58.80 per cent from N3.556 trillion in 2007 to N1.465 trillion in 2021 whilst foreign transactions also decreased by 29.38 per cent from N616 billion to N435 billion over the same period.

Total domestic transactions accounted for about 77 per cent of the total transactions carried out in 2021, whilst foreign transactions accounted for about 23 per cent of the total transactions in the same period.

The transaction data for 2022 shows that total domestic transactions are circa N1.586 trillion, whilst total foreign transactions are circa N301.37billion
