Traders’ clash: Makinde orders closure of Sasha market, imposes curfew

Oyo state Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on Saturday ordered indefinite closure of Shasha market in Ibadan following prolonged bloody clash between traders in the market.

The state governor also imposed curfew in and around Akinyele local government area of Oyo state as tension still mount around the community hosting the market.

Engr. Makinde in a statement made available to Journalists in Ibadan by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, declared that the closure was to forestall breakdown of law and order in the area.

“His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde has directed the immediate closure of Shasha market indefinitely following reports of a breach of peace in the area.The governor has also approved the imposition of curfew on Shasha. It will run from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m.” he said

The curfew according to the statement would cover the entire Shasha community and the market area.is to run from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Governor Makinde then warned residents of the affected area to go about their legitimate businesses peacefully, stating that anyone caught perpetrating violence will face the wrath of the law.

Commercial and other activities were paralysed at the market on Friday following bloody clash between suspected miscreants and some Hausa traders in the market.

During the bloody clash which reared its head on Thursday, two people identified as Adeola and Asinmiyu were feared dead with many shops razed by the warring miscreants.

Oyo state Police Command in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Lawrence Fadeyi, said the clash was between social miscreants within the market.

“It was a clash between two social miscreants in which  one of the miscreant, Adeola Sakirundeen ‘m’ was hit by the other and died later while receiving treatment in an hospital. The Commissioner of Police, S .A security and other Police tactical teams visited the scene for on the spot assessment.

“Massive Police deployment and that of the sister security agencies were made to dowse tension. Critical Stakeholders have also been consulted to appeal to the people. Normalcy is gradually returning to the area,” he said.
