Traffic offence: Court sentences drivers to 20 hours community service, orders forfeiture of 9 vehicles to LASG

 

The Lagos State Mobile Court on Thursday ruled that nine out of 21 vehicles whose drivers were caught driving against traffic along Oshodi-Mile 2 expressway should be forfeited outrightly to the Lagos state government.

The Magistrate Mrs Salau Omobola court also ruled that the drivers of the vehicle be sentenced to 20-hour community service.

During the arraignment, the accused persons had all pleaded guilty to the offence when the charge was read to them in court, while the remaining 12 drivers are still at large.

In a press release from the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Task Force), Agency’s chairman, Olayinka Egbeyemi, said its enforcement team led by the impounded the vehicles and made the arrest around Cele and Iyana-Isolo bus-stops along Oshodi-Mile 2 expressway.

He said, “They ran into our enforcement team while we were returning from demolition exercise at Eric Moore and Orile-Iganmu along Lagos-Badagry Expressway on Tuesday evening”.

Egbeyemi disclosed further that the residents and motorists have been complaining seriously about the activities of drivers driving against traffic and causing serious traffic gridlock on a daily basis along the axis.

“Honestly speaking it is painful that with high level of enlightenment campaigns and several warnings by the government motorists including private car owners can still be driving against traffic in such thereby blocking on-coming vehicles and causing standstill at Iyana-Isolo” he said.

The chairman however advised the remaining 12 drivers who abandoned their vehicles and ran away to avoid arrest to immediately report to the Agency for prosecutions.

According to the Magistrate, vehicles forfeited to the government include (Acura car APP 39 EX), (Toyota Hilux KSF 374 DH), (Nissan Small bus KJA 646 XT), (Peugeot APP 437 FN), (LT Volkswagen bus JJJ 822 XT), (Volkswagen ‘T4 bus’ KTU 169 XJ), (Volkswagen KRD 438 XL), (Volkswagen bus EKY 946 FT) and (KRD 793 XT).
