Tragedy: Another truck loses control, kills road side hawkers, many injured in Anambra

Seven persons were confirmed dead on Wednesday while many were severely injured in a ghastly accident in Onitsha, the commercial nerve of Anambra state.

The accident which occurred around Toronto hospital along Upper Iweka and MCC axis of the Onitsha-Awka expressway, was caused by break failure involving a trailer laden with kerosene, which was heading towards Upper Iweka from Awka.

According to an eyewitness, Chukwudi Obi, the driver of the vehicle had veered off the speed lane to the service lane where traders displayed their wares by the side of the road, killing some petty traders and their customers.

It was learnt that security men had hectic time trying to evacuate bodies of the victims  littered along the way.

On his part, Prof. Peter Katchy,  the Chairman of Red Cross Society in Anambra State, said that seven persons died at the spot, and had been deposited at the Toronto hospital mortuary, while the injured were receiving medical attention.

The Onitsha accident brought it to two experienced in Anambra State within the week. One involving cement truck and tipper claimed six lives at Umuchu, Aguata Local Government Area, Anambra State.
