Tragedy strikes in Gabon as footballer collapses, dies inside pitch

A footballer collapsed and died just seconds after challenging mid-air for a header.

Herman Tsinga was playing for Gabon First Division side Akanda FC when he fell ill on the pitch.

An ambulance raced onto the playing surface and the player was put onto a stretcher.

But the medical staff’s efforts proved in vain and the 30-year-old footballer was pronounced dead at Owendo hospital.

The shocking incident happened just 23 minutes into the game against Missile FC.

It is not known at the time what Tsinga died as a result of, but Africa News are reporting that he “received a cardiac massage by a military doctor”.

Another local newspaper, reports that both ambulances pitch-side did not have defibrillators or oxygen masks in the vehicles.

It is the seventh death in 12 years in the Gabon national football league.
