Transportation sector since Independence lacks national policy – Amaechi

Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi , has expressed dismay that the Transportation sector since Independence does not have an approved National Transport Policy (NTP) to coordinate and drive the growth of the sector. Th e minister further assured that they have just concluded the 2017 edition of the National Council on Transportation (NCT) meeting last August which was held in Sokoto, where two InterMinisterial Committees involving relevant stakeholders were setup to handle two pressing issues in the sector. Amaechi noted this at the just concluded one-day seminar organised by the Abuja Transport and Aviation Correspondents Association (ATACA) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Transportation with the Th eme: “Forging a resilient Transportation Industry in Nigeria”. According to him, the committee on the fi nalization of the National Transport Policy document which is before the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and National Economic Council (NEC). He further explained that the second committee is to handle and resolve the face-off between the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and the State Governments over the roles and management of the Unifi ed National Drivers’ License Scheme and other related matters. Ameachi, noted with assurance that the outcome of these two Committees will take us many steps ahead in the Transportation sector. “Building a robust Transportation Industry in Nigeria is one of the cardinal objectives of the present Administration hence the merger of the Ministry of Transport and Aviation to become the present Federal Ministry of Transportation. “It is pertinent to note that the development of the Transportation sector or industry is cardinal to the economic recovery strategy of the present Administration . “When we came on board in 2015, we took a holistic approach and developed sector specifi c strategies to revamp and make the various subsector of the Transportation Industry selfsustaining,” he said.
