Tribunal okays Al-Makura election as senator

The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Lafia Friday upheld the election of Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the senator representing Nasarawa south senatorial district.

Delivering judgement in Lafia, Justice David Ugoh dismissed all the issues raised by the petitioner, the former senator Suleiman Adokwe of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against Senator Al-Makura for lacked of evidences and merit.

He said the petitioner failed to prove his case with concrete fact and evidences, but had relied on hearsay which he said have no place in law.

“The petitioner failed to prove his case beyond reasonable doubt and could not prove the case of over voting, non-compliance and irregularities during the March 2019 general elections.”

He, therefore, dismissed the case and upheld the election of Senator Al-Makura as the duly elected senator representing Nasarawa south Senatorial district at the National Assembly.

The counsel to the petitioner, John Matthew, said the judgement was in order, but would advise the petitioner appropriately on the legal implications, adding that “on my personal opinion this judgement is of substantial.”

The state APC secretary, Aliyu Bello, expressed appreciation with the judgement delivered described the judgement as “victory for democracy.”
