Troops kill 7 insurgents in Damasak attack

-7 soldiers wounded, vehicles, arms recovered

The Nigerian Army yesterday said the attack on 145 Battalion by Boko Haram insurgents in Dama- sak in Mobar local government area of Borno state around 6pm on Wednesday left seven terrorists dead and about seven troops wounded.
Director, Army Public Relations of Operation Lafia Dole, Brig.- Gene Texas Chukwu who stated this in a statement yesterday said members of the general public should discountenance earlier reports by an online media that the Boko Haram captured Damask 24 hours after Chief of Army Staff, Buratai’s visit.
The statement said the terrorists were subdued following a superior fire power of troops in Damasak.
“The Nigerian Army wishes to state that, 145 Battalion deployed in Operation LAFIYA DOLE at Damasak, Mobar local government area of Borno state on 12 September 2018, inflicted many casualties on the Boko Haram terrorists and their weapons as well as vehicles were captured and some were destroyed during the encounter.
“Seven (7) members of the ter- rorists group were neutralised dur- ing the encounter while others flee into the nearby bush,” the statement cleared.
According to Chukwu, items recovered include two vehicles, One anti aircraft gun, 4 AK 47 rifles, seven (7) magazines and 2 hand grenades.
Others were one bayonet, 47 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and 174 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition.
It said efforts were on by the troops to get other fleeing members of the group, saying “unfortunately, seven (7) soldiers sustained inju- ries during the attack, and that the wounded soldiers have been evacu- ated to the military medical facility for attention.
“Residents of the area are advised to report any suspicious movements or activities to the law enforcement agents for prompt action,” it stated.
The Nigerian Army called on the media to always exercise caution, verify facts as well as balance their reports before rushing to the press to avoid misinforming the public on sensitive issues.
