Troops kill armed robbers in military uniform, 3 cultists arrested in Benue

Troops of 72 Special Force Battalion have killed some suspected armed robbers at Yelwata, Guma local government area of Benue state.

Yelwata is a border town between Benue and Nasarawa state.

A statement by Army spokesperson, Col. Sagir Musa on Saturday, said the armed robber was killed in the early hours of Friday, March 15, 2019, when the troops who were on patrol along Yelwata-Kadarko to monitor post election activities had an encounter with some armed robbers.

“The suspected armed robbers were dressed in military desert camouflage and robbing motorists along the road.

“However, the gallant troops of the Battalion engaged the robbers in a gun battle which resulted in the elimination of one of the armed robbers during the encounter, while others took to their heels,” Musa said.

According to him, Items recovered after the encounter include; one locally made rifle, three rounds of 7.62MM special ammunition, and one empty case of 7.62MM special ammunition.

He also said three suspected cultists terrorising the North-Bank general area of Makurdi metropolis were arrested by Intelligent Operatives of 72 Special Forces Battalion deployed within the town to monitor post election activities. 

The suspects, according to him are: Shuaibu Sale, Umar Sule and Idris Bawa. 

“Items recovered from them include: one locally made revolver pistol, one round of 9mm  and a polythene bag containing weeds suspected to be Indian Hemp,” Musa said.

He urged members to be security conscious at all times and report any suspicious activities or movements of individuals or groups to the nearest law enforcement agents for prompt action.
