Troops on red alert to forestall attack on Benue – Commander

Commander of the military spike codenamed Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), Maj.-Gen.
Adeyemi Yekini, has disclosed that troops had been placed “on red alert to forestall any attacks on innocent citizens in Benue state and environs.” Yekini was reacting to allegations that there was serious gun battle between troops of the Nigerian Army and suspected herdsmen militia.
Chairman of Guma local government area of Benue state, Anthony Shawon, was said to have made a post on Thursday on his Facebook wall alleging that “there was a serious gun battle between the Nigeria Army and Fulani militia from morning till noon in Tse Chiata, near Damkor in Benue state.” He said: “Of recent, the herdsmen have started trooping into my Local Government around border settlements.
They have formed herdsmen barracks, and have been grazing on crops the locals have cultivated.
“In Mbagwen, seven kilometres into Benue state from Nasarawa they are grazing freely because of the bad roads.
The army has worked hard else our communities could have been inhabitable.
They will double their efforts else no one will harvest crops.” However, Yekini, in a telephone chat with newsmen yesterday, explained noted that a few herdsmen
