U.S. supports Nigeria with N52bn to boost peace

The government of the United States of America has assisted Nigeria with the sum of N52 billion to boost peace.

A statement sent to Blueprint by the US embassy in Abuja Friday indicated that the sum would also be used to control HlV/AIDS, combat trafficking in persons and counter violent extremism.

Given through the Agency for International Development (USAID), the sum is part of a bilateral Development Objectives Assistance Agreement (DOAG) which the country signed with Nigeria in 2015.

The under the agreement, Nigeria has so far received the sum of N743 billion from the US.

According to the statement, “As the most populous country in Africa with the largest economy, Nigeria has tremendous potential and influence over the future of the continent.

“With this additional funding, the United States continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting development programs that will benefit the Nigerian people.

“The United States is responsible for 80 per cent of the AIDS treatment provided in Nigeria. About 1.9 million Nigerians are living with HIV/AIDS, according to the U.S. supported Nigeria HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS) of 2018.

“For the first time in modern history, we have the opportunity to control HIV without a vaccine,” Patterson said. “In partnership with government, civil society, the private sector, and communities, we can help Nigeria overcome this disease.”
