In order to boost teaching and learning morale in basic education system, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) would from tomorrow begin a three-day National Assessment of Learning Achievements in Basic Education (NALABE).
Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Ahmid Bobboyi, who briefed the press yesterday in Abuja, said students in selected junior secondary schools would also be involved in the exercise.
He said the assessment, which is on its 5th edition, started in 2001, but stopped in 2011 due to challenges, would be used to “determine the efficiency and quality of performance of primary and junior secondary school pupils and students” in the country.
The exercise, he disclosed, would be used to collect data on achievement of learners, in primary 5 and 6, as well as students in junior secondary school 2 and 3 in four major subjects of English, Mathematics, Basic Science and Technology, and Social Studies.
Bobboyi added that the exercise would “synthesise basic education information on primary and junior secondary schools” and would be used to “explain pupils’/ students’ achievements, access to schools, efficiency of basic education system and school/community relations.
“The target population consists of all public and private primary and junior secondary schools in the 36 states of the country and the federal Capital Territory (FCT)”, he said, adding that 1, 080 primary and 432 junior secondary schools constituted the sample schools.
“In each selected school, 20 pupils would be randomly selected in one intact class of primaries 5 and six to participate in the study and head teachers of the sampled schools and teachers of the selected primaries 5 and 6 would also participate.”
