UEFA Champions League Matchday 6 preview: Liverpool, Inter, Dortmund fight for qualification

A tricky tie will take place at the Red Bull Arena Salzburg when Group E leaders Liverpool travel to face Red Bull Salzburg. The Reds lead the group by 10 points, one clear of second placed Napoli and need just a point to guarantee their progress to the last 16. Now this sounds easy on paper, but in reality it is not. The Reds’ form away from home has been mixed, losing 2-0 to Napoli and then winning 4-1 at bottom of the log Genk. Against a fired up Salzburg side who are the top scorers in the group, Jurgen Klopp will have a lot to think about. Salzburg lost at Anfield earlier in the season but they scored three goals in the process. They will no doubt be looking to avenge that defeat in front of their fans.

Napoli will entertain Genk at the Stadio San Paolo and are expected to cruise to victory and seal their place in the next round.

Inter Milan will be looking to join Barcelona in the next round when they clash at the San Siro. Inter are second in Group F, level on points with Borussia Dortmund and will go through if they defeat the Spanish giants. They can still go through with a draw or defeat as long as Dortmund don’t pick up any points against Slavia Prague. Barca are under no pressure going into this one. They will top the group regardless of what happens here, but are not likely to let the game pass them by. They however have a mixed record against Italian opposition, winning six, drawing 11 and losing seven of 24 games. Dortmund will be hoping the Catalans do them a favor though, but will surely be the least of their problems.

Borussia Dortmund will take on Slavia Prague at the Westfalenstadion. The task is simple for the German side: win and hope Inter lose or draw and they will be through. A draw will also see them through as long as Inter face defeat. Anything less than that, and it’s the Europa League.

Group H leaders Ajax will battle Valencia at the Amsterdam Arena. The Dutch sides are two points clear of both the Spanish side and Chelsea and will target all three points to lock down top spot.

Chelsea will entertain Lille at Stamford Bridge and must win to stand a chance of booking a place in the next round.

Lyon will battle Group G leaders RB Leipzig and must win to stand a chance of making the round of 16, while Zenit St Petersburg must pick up points against bottom side Benfica at the Estadio Da Luz to remain in contention for qualification.
