Uncertainty as residents sell palliative items looted from Gwagwalada warehouse

Youths in Gwagwalada area council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have found themselves a new business after breaking into the warehouse used to store COVID-19 palliatives.

The environment is rowdy and flooded with strong-bodied young men, some with harmful weapons like daggers and knives. Some are the local market security enforcement men who were seen with local guns making way for themselves into the warehouse.

Around the warehouse, Blueprint Correspondent sighted young men who successfully looted many bags of rice, semovita and other items, and sold them to interested buyers.

A buyer who refused to mention his name said he purchased a bag of 10kg rice at N1500.00, while 10kg Semovita sold at N1000. Sugar, spaghetti, Indomie, salt were sold at give away prices.

“I have bought three bags of rice and two bags of semovita because I couldn’t go in but it is better and cheaper. I don’t regret it, because those selling suffered to get in.

“I tried to go in, but the entrance is over crowded and lots of people have died. I just have to buy,” he said.

It took over four hours from the time the warehouse was broken, yet the food items in it remained in large quantities.

Residents from neighbouring communities such as Gwako, Passo, Dagiri trooped into Gwagwalada to get their share of the palliatives.

“I have seen people from Kwali area council, Dagiri, Tunga Maje, and Zuba, here. In fact I was coming from SDP Junction, and there is go-slow now due to people coming from neighbouring communities,” a resident said.
