Undergraduate docked for posting rape victim’s picture on internet

A student of the Kwara State School of Health Technology, Offa, was on Wednesday docked by an Ilorin Magistrate Court for allegedly posting the photograph of a student, who was gang raped, on the internet.

The accused, Aluko Opeyemi, 23, allegedly posted the picture of a fellow student, who was allegedly gang raped by her colleagues on the internet while he was instructed to look after her during her treatment.
According to the police, instead of the accused to take care of her, he took her photograph and posted it on the internet.

The police added that their investigation revealed that the accused intentionally took the picture of the victim and posted it on the internet by using ‘2GO’, with the intention to tarnish the reputation of the victim.
The accused pleaded ‘false’ to the charges of printing or engraving matter known to be defamatory contrary to section 394 of Penal code law, he was charged with.

Police Prosecutor, Corporal Abideen Odehinde, objected to the bail of the accused on the grounds that it would frustrate on-going police investigation into the case, adding that the accused might not understand the gravity of the offence he committed, if admitted to bail.
Abideen added that the accused counsel did not advance any cogent argument to convince the court why such ‘luxury’ should be granted.
