UNICEF moves to fortify Sokoto, Kebbi pre-primary education

United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) has commenced measures strengthen pre-primary education in Sokoto and Kebbi states.
At a two-day workshop held recently, the Fund said the step was aimed at inspiring high level advocacy on the need for adequate attention in the pre-primary education in the states.
It stated that at the end of the advocacy, the two states would be expected to scale-up pre-primary education by making adequate provisions towards improving it.
While commending the federal government for it Early Child Care Education and Development (ECCED) policy, UNICEF also listed challenges confronting the policy.
These challenges, the Fund stated, include weak coordination by relevance agencies, low awareness and understanding of the importance of ECCED, as well as poor articulation and funding.
UNICEF’s Sokoto state officer, Mr. Paul Mudzongo, said children that participated in ECCED were more successful in school, saying they were more competent socially, emotionally and have higher verbal, intellectual and physical development during early childhood than others not enrolled in the programme.
