Unilorin undergraduate invents electronic walking stick for blinds as varsity produces 130 first class

A 300-level student of Biomedical Engineering, university of  Ilorin has invented an electronic eye walking stick for the blinds even as the institution is set to award 130 first class graduates coming Wednesday.

Vice chancellor of the university, Professor Sulyman Abdulkareem, made the disclosure while briefing Journalists ahead of the institution’s 35th convocation ceremony.

He said the federal government has also agreed to commercialis the invention, with some several others,a development which according to him, “would put the name of the university in the zenith of fame and recognition”.

The vice chancellor who is also a professor of chemical engineering also announced that his innovation of an oil spillage management product achieved long ago, had been “commercialised and patented”.

He said the university will also before the end of this year sign a memorandum of understanding with the
Nigeria Army with a mandate to develop a multilayered armoured composite for military purposes.

“This is going to be the final layer of the process of and talks we had begun since last year with the Nigerian Army on our capacity to fabricate moulds using composite materials developed from solid waste to build military apparatus. A major breakthrough in this regard is that we have developed a novel method of carrying out compositic room temperature Rheological studies on polymers”, he said.

On the forthcoming graduation, he said a total of 12, 009 graduates of the university will be convoked out of which 10,299 are graduating with higher degree/diplomas while the remaining 1,710 are graduating with higher degrees/postgraduates diplomas.

“In the first degree/diploma category, we have 130 first class, 2,902 second class upper division, 5,661 second class lower division and 31 pass.”
