Updated: Drama as DSS whisks El-Zakzaky, wife away from Abuja airport

A mild drama played out at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja on Friday as operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) took the embattled leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat out of airport.

They have been placed in custody.

The Ethiopian Airline ET911 conveying the leaders and some of the members  touched down the Abuja airport at 11;40.

The airline enroute Addis Ababa reportedly left New Delhi at 17OOhrs Nigerians time to Nigeria.

Sources said the DSS evacuated the operatives that were on ground at the airport  an hour before his arrival and  brought 50 new ones for the purpose of moving the IMN leader

Journalists who were awaiting the arrival of the IMN leader at the airport were asked to set their cameras at the arrival lounge of the International Wing but were not allowed to see him. 

El-Zakzaky was said to be taken through the presidential wing by the operatives, preventing journalists to have any contacts with the couple. 

It was gathered that the officers drove an ambulance to the tarmac with a wheelchair to pick up the detainees. 

The leader of the sect arrived the country after their contentious medical trip to India.
