The House of Representatives, has urged Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki to within one week, issue a fresh proclamation for the purpose of inaugurating the state House of Assembly.
The however directed the Inspector General of Police, and Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), to shut down the complex, as well as provide adequate security in order to allay fears of intimidation, and threats as alleged by some members.
This came following Wednesday’s adoption of report of its Ad hoc committee set up to investigate the crisis, as turned it in with five recommendations.
The House also called on all members of the state Assembly, whether those controversially inaugurated, and the others to dissolve their functions in the interest of peace, even as it said all actions so far taken by the Assembly should be declared null and void.
However, the House warned that if the above recommendations are not heeded, or failed, “the National Assembly should invoke the provisions of section 11(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), to take over the state House of Assembly until the situation normalises”.
Briefing the House earlier on its findings that necessitated the recommendations, Chairman of the Ad hoc committee, Hon. Abdulrazak Namdas , explained that the crisis bothers on the selection of leadership positions of the Assembly, involving the state governor and his deputy, Hon. Philip Shuaibu on one side, and the national chairman of the APC on the other.
He further said the proclamation issued by Obaseki on June 14 was not done in accordance with the constitution, and that same was not communicated with all the members-elect..
