Updated: Gombe lawmakers impeach speaker, others

The Speaker Gombe state House of Assembly Abubakar Sadiq Ibrahim Gurba has been removed from office.

Gurba was impeached Tuesday by 16 out of the 24 lawmakers through voice votes at the floor of the House.

Sixteen members signed the impeachment notice that led to the removal of the speaker who was replaced with Abubakar Mohammed Luggerewo, representing Akko central.

Luggerewo, representing Akko central, was immediately sworn in as the 7th speaker of the state legislature.

The 36-year-old Luggerewo was sworn in by deputy speaker, Siddi Buba, from Kwami west constituency.

Former deputy speaker, Shuaibu Adamu, announced the names of the 16 members that passed the voice vote and the motion of the impeachment which was moved by Saddam Bello, representing Funakaye constituency.

Musa Buba, member representing Balanga North said the decision to impeach Abubakar was a collective decision.

He said: “The former speaker of the House was removed due to lack of confidence. We lost confidence in his leadership, and as a House, we are at liberty to change leadership. Once you lack confidence in someone, then there has been a breach. We felt the best thing was to remove him and replace him with a brand new speaker.

Majority leader, Samuel Markus, was also removed through a voice vote announced by Mustapha Usman representing Gombe south and replaced with Ladan Yerima, representing Kaltungo east constituency.

Deputy chief whip, Yahaya Kaka, was replaced with Saddam Bello, representing Funakaye constituency.

Calm was returned by security operatives who pacified hoodlums suspected to be loyal to the ousted speaker.

The impeachment came one year after Adamu was removed over his loyalty to Governor Inuwa Yahaya .
