Updated: Kano assembly passes Emirate Council bill

The Kano state House of Assembly has approved the 2019 Emirate council bill, despite some opposition against its passage.

The Speaker of the assembly, Alhaji Abdulaziz Garba Gafasa, who announced this during plenary in Kano, Thursday, said the passage has ensured that four additional Emirates council has been approved.  The new emirates include Bichi, Gaya, Rani and Karaye.

A day before the passage, the assembly was in a rowdy session over Governor Ganduje decision to resubmit the Emirate Council bill as members were sharply divided over the governor’s insistence on breaking up the Kano emirate.

A Kano High Court, presided by Justice Usman Nabba, had nullified the new emirates and consequently restrained the governor, the House of Assembly, and proxies from giving effect to or from continuing to give effect to the (Appointment and Deposition Law) 2019.

The court had held that whatever action purportedly taken by the state House of Assembly was violated its own rule. It also held that the assembly failed to comply with its Order II, Rule 3, and therefore said any further action on the matter would be null and void.
