Updated: Popular actor, Baba Ijesha, appears in court over ‘sexual assault’

Embattled Nollywood actor of the Yoruba genre, Olanrewaju James Omiyinka, was Wednesday arraigned before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos state.

With his appearance in court on Wednesday, the hearing of the sexual assault case against the actor may have commenced.

Popularly known as Baba Ijesha, actor Omiyinka was arrested on April 22 by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old minor in the care of Lagos-based comedienne, Adekola Adekanya, popularly known as Princess.

The actor this medium learnt also confessed to the crime and was captured by a closed-circuit television in the victim’s house.

Earlier, the case has been stalled due to the industrial action by the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria.

Similarly, just last month, Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (LSDSVRT) highlighted some sections of the Lagos State’s law on sexual and domestic violence and the likely punishment if the actor is found guilty.

The agency equally expressed its active involvement in the case, just as it confirmed that the duplicate case file has been forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

Meanwhile, since the news came to the fore, Yoruba actors appear divided in their stance concerning the allegations.

While some set of actors appear sympathetic to Baba Ijesha’s plight, others have continued to drum support and crave justice.
