Updated: Reps ‘shuts’ NASS over coronavirus


The House of Representatives has asked management of the the National Assembly to immediately make arrangements for the testing of entrants to the National Assembly,  as well ban visitors to the complex, as a move against spread of the dreaded Coronavirus. The House in a resolution on Wednesday, also urged the federal government to ban public gatherings, including open religious worships, as was recently done in the Vatican and Mecca.


While the Minister of Health is expected to brief leadership of the on a weekly basis over the situation, the House further urged management of airports to put measures in place to reduce crowds at the airports while officials at the borders should be put on red alert.


The House also called for a national day of prayer to seek God’s intervention in the coronavirus pandemic.
These were sequel to adoption of a motion moved under matters of urgent public importance by Hon. Hon. Charles Zakari-Chawai.


Speaking on the matter,, Minority Leader, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu said open religious gathering should be banned for now as it was done in countries like the Vatican City, Iran and Saudi Arabia to curtail the spread of the virus.


Also contributing, Hon. Rotimi Afe, said that it was not about banning the foreign airlines alone, adding that people are still coming in through the country’s boarder, adding that people come in to the country by bus from Ghana, a country that had recorded six cases of Coronavirus.
The House however resolved that Nigeria should sign agreement with Singapore for the supply of test kits for the virus, while also adding that public institutions should have temperature testing kits.
