Use sports to curb diabetes menace – School Principa

By Donald Iorchir Abuja Th e Principal of Government Secondary School, (GSS) Zuba, Gwagwalada area council, AbujaFCT. Mr. Segun Simeon Bankole has called for active sporting activities among children to assist curb incessant cases of diabetes rampaging teens and youths in the country.

Bankole said that children, especially those in schools should be encouraged to embrace physical exercise with sports as their major area of concentration aside their academic work, stressing that, Nigeria have dedicated boys and girls who are gifted in sports. Th e principal was speaking at the 8th annual inter-house sports competition of the school in Zuba.

He said in time past people trek distances as well as performed lots of domestic chores even worked on the farm as part of the way to be exercising the body. According to him, it was worrisome that most of the schools, including some with big names don’t even have play grounds. He urged all the stakeholders in the education sector not only to depend on the cognitive and aff ective domains of education, but to also focus on the psychomotor aspect.

Th e principal appealed to corporate bodies to support sports which according to him, that would be a viable instrument for cementing national unity and grassroots sports development. He also advised government to put more money into development of sports infrastructures in order to boost sports in the country. Th e 8th annual inter-house sports competition featured 100m fi nal, boys and girls, invitation relay, (4×100) boys and girls and staff race. Meanwhile, 1st position goes to Red-Ikwa House with 298 points. Green-Yimi House came 2nd with 250 points, while 3rd position went to Blue- Zuba House which scored 186 points.
