UTME tutorial centres breeding ‘corrupt’ students – JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has advised parents and candidates for its Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) against tutorial centres that have sprung up across the country.

The JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, gave the advice on Monday in Abuja during a meeting of critical stakeholders on strategic planning and preparation for the supervision and administration of the 2019 UTME.

He cautioned parents and candidates to be wary of tutorial centres in the country, adding thar some of them are breeding grounds for examination malpractices.

“Tutorial operators are causing damages to education, because parents are just there because of results (they churned out) in previous years, so they go to any extent to get good results. They are not teaching these students anything, they are faking results for them, their work is to corrupt the system,” he said.

Prof. Oloyede  said the examination body had prohibited candidates from bringing in ATM cards, key-holders, erasers and other cheating devices to examination hall in its forthcoming 2019 UTME in order to curtail any act of malpractice.

The JAMB boss mentioned other items that are banned in the Computer-Based Test (CBT) to include watches, biro, spy reading glasses, earpiece, recorder, camera, among others.

oloyede further noted that the Board would soon publish the  names of impersonators who took part in JAMB exams within the last 10 years in order to shame them and serve as deterrent to others.

While saying the Board has rolled out several innovations like Integrated Brochure/Syllabus System, Eligibility Checker to ensure seamless admission process, Oloyede stated that candidates would be subjected to mandatory  biometric verification during the exam.

Speaking on the number of students that gained admission from the 2018 UTME, Oloyede disclosed that the Board had so far admitted 566, 262 out of the about 800, 000 candidates that are qualified for admission.

He said about 1.99 million candidates registered for the 2019 UTME as well as Direct Entry, adding that  22 CBT centres that violated the laid down rules during the registration exercise would not be allowed to take part in the examination beginning from April 11.
