The Federal Universities’ Pensioners Association (FUPA) has advocated for collaboration between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and pensioners to make their welfare a major issue in the 2015 general elections.
President of the association, Dr Ayuba Kura, said this yesterday in a statement in Zaria.
He advised that those who “don’t have the welfare of pensioners at heart should be voted out in the forthcoming elections.
He said: “The Labour and Pensioners should collaborate more to make welfare of Pensioners a major issue in the 2015 general elections; those who do not have the welfare of pensioners at heart and who steal or encourage the stealing of pension funds must be voted out at all levels.”
Kura pointed out that looting of funds meant for pensioners had subjected them to untold hardship and untimely deaths.
On the lowering of minimum years of experience for appointment of Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PENCOM) from 20 to 15 years, the president that it was a welcome development, adding that it would have been better if it could be much lower than that.
However, he lauded the Senate for passing the pension Reform Act (Amendment) Bill 2013, and urged the House of Representatives to borrow a leaf from Upper Chamber by passing the bill too.
