Varsity don tasks LG councilors’ forum on leadership 

A Professor of Political Science and International Relations, University of Abuja, Sheriff Ghali Ibrahim, has admonished lawmakers at the local government level to imbibe the spirit of leadership in the discharge of their responsibilities.

Professor Sheriff made call while addressing the National Councilors Forum of Nigeria (NCFN) at a three day retreat in conjunction with Ashraf Consulting Nigeria Limited in Abuja over the weekend.

The university don said the aim of the retreat was to equip the councillors with adequate knowledge on effective legislation in order to improve their leadership positions as representatives of the people, especially at the local government level.

He pointed out that local government being the closest unit of governance to the people is expected to play significant role in providing social services to the rural dwellers.

Also, in a paper titled “Conceptual Framework and Dynamics of Local Government Development,” Dr. Iroro S. Izu of the Department of International Relations and Diplomatic Studies, Ave-Maria University, Piyanko, Nassarawa state, emphasised that capacity building, is required for local councils to take advantage of modern technology in order to improve on their services.

He said this must be combined with the synergy by political and administrative cadres in the councils, adding that building institution and system capacity that produces the human capital that is committed to the principles of good governance encapsulated in transparency, accountability, honesty, foresightedness, equity and justice.
