VC explains bid to make UniLag world-class

The vice chancellor of the University of Lagos (UniLag), Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe has identified the establishment of the university’s own minirefinery as a way to make the school a world class institution.
Ogundipe who spoke at the second Engineering Faculty alumni lecture said his plans towards making UniLag a world-class institution included building a mini-refinery and setting up of skills acquisition centre for the students.
Ogundipe, who is the 12th vice chancellor of the institution emphasised the establishment of a mini-refinery as a way to develop Chemical Engineering students of the school.
“If you go to some of the universities in Texas, when their students graduate, they do not need to do certain courses when it comes to professional courses, because they have refineries in their universities.
Engineering has left that level of just settling down and starts computing.
“It is now about turning ideas to realities.
It is about producing entrepreneurial skills and developing the skills in the life our students.
“We need to develop our students, all of them have skills that are unique to them, and the skills can help them set up their own businesses in future.
’’ The VC, however, said the mini-refinery project was being done in partnership with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Bank of Industry (BOI).
Note that in January 2018, UniLag became the first university in Nigeria to establish a television station following President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval of the institution’s TV station.
