VHW project improves access to maternal, newborn care in Gombe

Society For Family Health (SFH), has said the Gombe state Village Health Worker (VHW) Scheme has revolutionised access, coverage and uptake of Maternal Newborn and Child Health Project (MNH) interventions and strengthened health and community systems.

The Managing Director of the organization, Dr Omokhudu Idogho, stated this while speaking during the dissemination of MNCH intervention achievement in the state on Tuesday.

He said the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, funded (MNH)  aimed at reducing maternal newborn and child morbidity by increasing coverage of lifesaving intervention across the state.

He said the project was successful with the help of selected and trained women who were referred to as Village Health Workers.

“The Village Health Workers are an arm of the formal health system and are invariably regarded as the government recognized staff.”

He called on the state government to invest in health in order to achieve universal health coverage.

In her presentation, Mrs Bolanle  Oyebola said, the Village health workers role is to conduct a home visit to pregnant women and nursing mothers in their communities.

“for the intervention period of November 2016 to October 2018, 1,200 Village Health Workers were able to record 384,899 contact with pregnant women in Gombe State.
